The GCE O level Higher Chinese Examination Syllabus (1116) comprises the following:

  • Paper One: Situational Writing and Essay Writing
  • Paper Two: Comprehension and Application
  • Paper Three: Oral Examination

O Level Higher Chinese

paper one:
SITUATIONAL WRITING AND ESSAY WRITING

Paper One comprises Situational Writing and Essay Writing.

Duration of Paper One is 2 hours.
Total marks for Paper One is 80.

Approved dictionaries (printed or electronic) by Ministry of Education are allowed to be used.

Section One

Situational Writing

There are 2 questions in total.

Candidates are required to answer 1 out of the 2 questions.

Situational Writing comprises Formal Emails and Online Discussion Forums.

This section carries 20 marks.

Section Two

Essay Writing

There are 3 questions in total.

Candidates are required to answer 1 out of the 3 questions.

Essay Writing comprises Narrative Essay Writing, Expository Essay Writing and Persuasive Essay Writing (inclusive of Source-Based Essay Writing and Speech Writing).

This section carries 60 marks.

O Level Higher Chinese

paper two:
COMPREHENSION AND APPLICATION

Paper Two comprises Cloze Passage, Grammatical Corrections, Comprehension I, Comprehension II and Summary Writing.

Duration of Paper Two is 1 hour 45 minutes.
Total marks for Paper Two is 80.

Section One

Cloze Passage and
Grammatical Corrections

(A) Cloze Passage

A Cloze Passage inclusive of 5 Multiple Choice Questions will be provided.

This section carries 10 marks.

(B) Grammatical Corrections

A Passage inclusive of 5 Open Ended Questions will be provided.

This section carries 10 marks.

Section Two

Comprehension I

A Comprehension Passage will be provided.

There are 5 Multiple Choice or Open Ended Questions in total.

This section carries 10 marks.

Section Three

Comprehension II

2 Comprehension Passages will be provided.

There are 9 Open Ended questions in total.

This section carries 38 marks.

Section Four

Summary Writing

Candidates are to write a Summary based on stipulated paragraphs from Comprehension II.

The word limit is 80.

This section carries 12 marks.

O Level Higher Chinese

paper three:
Oral examination

Paper Three comprises Oral Presentation and Discussion.

Duration of Paper Three is approximately 20 minutes.
Total marks for Paper Three is 40.

(A) Oral Presentation

A video (approximately 1 minute 30 seconds) will be provided.

Based on the stipulated question, candidates are required to conduct an oral presentation with reference to the video content.

Candidates have 10 minutes of preparation time before the actual examination takes place.

Candidates are allowed to take notes while viewing the given video repeatedly.

This section carries 20 marks.

(B) Oral Discussion

Candidates are required to engage in an Oral Discussion with the examiners.

This section carries 20 marks.
